The Essence of Emotions

Month

January 2017

Fragrant Ether* (An Etheree)

My
senses
go berserk
at the thought of
your touch on my skin
burning me oh so sweet
that I can taste your yearning
My moans then mingle with my sighs
Senses come around, I close my eyes
Inhaling the musky ether you leave

Irreplaceable You* (In Tanka)

I’d rather be molded
by you who knows all my secrets
than be freed by
someone who wishes to keep
me as his biggest secret

I’d rather be hurt
by you who understands pain
than be caressed by
someone who fails to see that
we are the sum of our scars

Resonate

instaquote-30-01-2017-18-37-27

If you think I’m beautiful
It’s because my eyes shine with the Promise of Tomorrow
Which your heart whispered Yesterday
To resonate in mine Today

Not I*

You’ve supressed her for ages
Your father did it
and your forefathers too

The little flicker of hope in her eyes,
You saw that as challenge;
Her feeble voice, you labelled rebellion.
She lost her voice
in trying to keep her life
But you barely kept her alive
making her breathe the stale moldy air
that you exhaled..

She learned to keep her head down,
and her shoulders stooped
She never saw the sun

The only time she looked up
was when she went down on you
Looking at you for affirmation
scared to death
that she was perhaps doing it wrong.

You killed her everyday
Day after day.
And you made her feel
It was her fault.

But She is not I
And She
will not be my daughter.

*This is a tribute to all the free-spirited women and was inspired by Afzal Moola’s always be you, a brilliant poem about (quoting his words) “hetero-patriachy and the emancipation of women.”

Home? (A Bref Double)

I left home long ago
in pursuit of my dreams
I found them in this place
where I now live

This place has seen me grow
nurtured me through
broken hearts and a mind
that refuses to believe

that I can be broken
For, every time I fell
I got up stronger
more ready to give

Though, only time will tell
if I really am home

*Week 5 Bref Double for our 2017 Poetic Resolution.

**Bref double is a French poetic form consisting of 3 quatrains and a final couplet, making 14 lines. The rules are:
4 stanzas: 3 quatrains (or 4-line stanzas) and 1 couplet (or 2-line stanza)
3 rhymes: an A rhyme, B rhyme, and C rhyme
The A and B rhymes appear twice in the first 3 stanzas and once each in the couplet
The C rhyme is the final line in each of the quatrains
Each poem has a variable line length, but the lines should be consistent within each poem

Resplendent (In Cinquain)

Beauty
is obsession
to the shallow mind that
sees not beauty as an art in
motion

Beauty
is perceiving
depth beneath facade to
unearth the most beautiful of
all arts

Art is
when emotion,
thought and action move in
harmony, so resplendent in
beauty

Extreme

When I’m sad, darkness takes refuge in my grief
When I’m happy, the sun rises from my cheeks
Thank Heavens, I don’t lose my temper
Or else I’d never find the numbers 1 to 10

When I love, I am Cupid’s female counterpart
When I hate, I am devil incarnate
When I’m excited, the whole world will know
But were I to go silent, even my heart will not hear its own beat

I need to filter my extremities!

A Poet’s Journey

When you discover a poet
Whose poetry makes you
Want to strip down to your soul
And in those moments of vulnerability
When you catch yourself
Feeling lost in between pauses,
Yet, you feel so protected
Within the confines of those lines

It is as if those verses
are your safehouses
While you are running from yourself
Without realising why
Till you reach your stop
Till you find your home
Till you make them your own

*To Him, whose poetry makes me both ‘think’ and ‘feel’
